Dermatology

Dermatology is the medical study of skin and diseases that can cause skin issues. Dermatology is unique in that it has both medical and surgical aspects. Sugar Land Dermatological treatments include filler injections, hair removal, laser therapy, photodynamic therapy, cryosurgery, radiation therapy, systemic therapy and topical therapy. However, there are many subspecialties within the field. Dermatology also has a very rich history that can be seen through the careful consideration of its establishment as a true medical science. Though, the diseases that the field of dermatology considers are debatably more important than either dermatological subcategories or dermatological history.

Branches Of Dermatology

Cosmetic dermatology, dermatopathology and teledermatology are all branches of the dermatological field. Cosmetic dermatology is a subcategory of the dermatological field that includes the practices of botox, laser surgery and fillers. However, most cosmetic surgeries performed in a dermatological office are minimally invasive. Cosmetic dermatology can be studied through either a fellowship in surgery or in laser medicine. Dermatopathology is also a subcategory in the dermatological field that focuses on diseases that can affect the skin. Dermatopathology can is usually studied through the completion of two residencies: one in pathology and another in dermatopathology. Teledermatology is another subcategory of dermatology.

Long History

Dermatology has a long history that is documented in early publications such as The Canon of Medicine. This book discussed a disease that sounds similar to skin cancer and prescribed zinc oxide for its treatment. Though zinc oxide is no longer considered a primary treatment for skin cancer by the field of Sugar Land dermatology, the compound is still used to this day in many products that treat skin irritations such as baby powder, diaper rash cream and anti-dandruff shampoo. In the late 1500s an Italian wrote one of the first scientific books discussing Dermatology, De Morbis Cutaneis. This book, whose title means “on the diseases of the skin”, discussed many different diseases in a scientific manner. In the early 1800s, the first notable schools of dermatology opened. One of these well known schools of dermatology was the Hopital Saint-Louis.

Eczema And Dermatologists

An example of a disease that the science of dermatology addresses is eczema. Eczema is a disease characterized by dermatitis, or the inflammation of the outer most layer of skin. Symptoms of eczema include redness, dryness, itching, crusting, flaking, blistering or cracking. As there is no known cure for eczema, Sugar Land dermatologists treat the disease with the aim of controlling its symptoms. Corticosteroids are commonly prescribed in the field of dermatology to relieve eczema symptoms. Usually, these steroids are prescribed in the form of a topical ointment. However, if a stronger more potent medication is needed, the steroids can be prescribed in an oral or injectable form as well. Sugar Land Dermatology professionals also look to anti-itch medications, such as antihistamines, to assist in the stopping of a patient’s eczema symptoms.

Sugarland Dermatology

Dermatology is a rich professional field with a plethora of subcategory fields that serve specific interests. The science also has a rich history that can be explored through early literary works. However, the diseases that dermatology as a science addresses are, in the minds of most, the critical reason why dermatology is such an important field of medicine. Diseases of the skin exist and, no matter how many different specialties there are in dermatology or how long dermatology has been studied, patients with skin diseases need doctors who have been specially trained to address their needs.
